Russia and Communist China did not succeed to to block the decision.
The United States, which initiated the meeting, is calling on Russia to explain why it has gathered an armed group of more than 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield noted that Russia will try to block the discussion in the Security Council, however, according to her, Moscow would not succeed. Most of the member countries of the Council are united in their desire to get Russia explanations.
The Western countries challenged Russia's actions arguing that they may pose a threat to international peace and security.
Deputy Russian Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyansky disagreed with this assessment. According to him, this is the first time in history when the Security Council was asked to discuss the "unfounded assumptions" of one of the members of the council at the address of another.
Communist China supported the position of Russia, pointing to the statements of Russian representatives who said that Moscow did not want war.
No draft resolution following the discussion is proposed to be adopted.
