US Removes Barriers in Diplomatic Relations with Taiwan
The United States canceled obligations for both countries' diplomats to make their meetings appear informal to make Communist China content.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday informed he was lifting restrictions on contacts between U.S. officials and their Taiwanese counterparts.
In a statement, Mr. Pompeo said that for several decades the State Department had created complex internal restrictions on interactions with Taiwanese counterparts by American diplomats, service members and other officials.
The United States government took these actions unilaterally, in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing, Pompeo stated. Today I am announcing that I am lifting all of these self-imposed restrictions, he added.
Decades of discrimination, removed
Taiwan's government welcomed the move.
Decades of discrimination, removed. A huge day in our bilateral relationship. I will cherish every opportunity, Mr. Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's de facto ambassador in Washington, tweeted.
A senior Taiwanese official familiar with the island's security planning told Reuters this was the largest adjustment by the United States in its policy toward the island in recent years, saying both main U.S. political parties have always strongly supported exchanges between the United States and Taiwan.
It reflects the current situation of closer cooperation between the United States and Taiwan on regional and global issues, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Biden Administration said to be unhappy
The American leftist foreign policy experts were unhappy about Mr. Pompeo's decision and claimed that Mr. Biden would not be content, either.
Ms. Bonnie Glaser, an Asia specialist at Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, said that the Biden administration will be unhappy that a policy decision like this was made in the final days of the Trump administration.
Mr. Biden has been one of the most pro-Beijing US politicians during his career. As a Vice-president President with his son, he made multi-million dollar deals with the top Communist Chinese who are now waiting for reciprocal gestures. But Biden's campaign hides that fact during elections with the help of the mainstream media.
